Learn More about Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam is a gravity dam on the Colorado River in the United States, near Boulder City on the Arizona-Nevada border. It was built between 1931 and 1936, during the Great Depression, and was inaugurated on 30 September 1935 by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers in difficult conditions that caused the death of 112 of them. It took almost 7 million tons of concrete to build.
by the beginning of the 20th century, Black Canyon and Boulder Canyon had been studied for their ability to accommodate a dam that would regulate the flow of the Colorado River, provide irrigation and supply electricity. In 1928, the US Congress approved such a project. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before and some of the techniques were still in their infancy. The hot summers and lack of infrastructure near the site were a problem. Nevertheless, Six Companies, Inc. completed construction on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule.
